The re-development of Melbourne’s Tullamarine–Calder Interchange (TCI) was the first road infrastructure project of its kind in Victoria to be delivered under an Alliance agreement.
Prior to this upgrade, this critical freeway junction suffered major congestion, significant delays and many accidents. Over 170,000 vehicles (including many freight vehicles) use this traffic hotspot every day.
This $150-million project, initiated by VicRoads, aimed for safer travel and improved traffic flow. It required the construction of new sections of the main carriageway, freeway bridges and ramps, separating local roads from the freeway. It delivered safer road alignment and intersections, as well as innovative sustainability measures such as incorporating solar panels into noise walls.
The TCI was completed in late 2007, ahead of schedule and well under budget. In 2008, the project was awarded the National Award for Excellence in Major Capital Alliances. The project was also a finalist in the 2008 Banksia Foundation Environmental Awards.
